Comfortable In My Skin

‘People often say that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.’ Salma Hayek

Comfortable in My Skin

I feel like I’ve been “gone” so long I’ve lost the will to write. Naw, not really, you know me, it’s always Words and Peace around here, isn’t it? Lately I’ve started focusing on life outer worldly a bit more. Heck, it’s not even exciting when you think about it. I am taking care of an unwandered life (mine) and dabbling in the details of being able to eat (working). How’s that for the glamorous glitzy life of a Cao? Life is kind of funny, we spend every day obsessing about what needs to be done, where we are lacking, so much so that we miss out on the beautiful, wonderful things about us, the people who cherish us, would want to friend us (or more) if we weren’t too busy trying to improve who we are. That’s sort of like saying I’m not good enough, so really you aren’t either. When I was young I was terribly conscious of my “flaws,” those little imperfections that marked me as different. But perhaps in this difference I have unique qualities that are a gift to me, if I would just accept them, love them, love myself.

Now that I am older, I’ve lost a lot of that inner struggle and have become at ease with the way my life is. I truly think it comes with age, obsessing those little things for this many years would be too exhausting. I kind of think Emma Stone said it perfectly, “You’re a human being; you live once and life is wonderful, so eat the damn Red Velvet cupcake.” Or take that leap of faith into a new romance, or job, or location. You never know, it may be the single most important, most cherished, decision you made in your entire, wonderful life. But that’s just my wooden knuckle on it, get your own piece of red velvet cake. 😉

  2. Ah my friend, I enjoyed your writing and glad to see it again! As I’ve got older there’s a couple of things that have at least sunk in *laughs*. One is that no person is an island, he/she needs friends without and God within (and you know what I follow for that). And the other is that Life would continue to be ordinary if it weren’t for some fantastic experiences to convince us otherwise. I love Carl Jung’s concept of the synchronistic event. That, yes, something is indeed beyond our simple thoughts and is reaching out hoping that we take notice. My favorite example is thus…

French writer Émile Deschamps tells of his sychronistic experience. In 1805 he was treated to some plum pudding by the stranger Monsieur de Fortgibu. Ten years later, he encountered plum pudding on the menu of a Paris restaurant, and wanted to order some, but the waiter told him the last dish had already been served to another customer, who turned out to be de Fortgibu.

Then, many years later, in 1832, Émile Deschamps was at a diner, and was once again offered plum pudding. He recalled the earlier incident and told his friends that only de Fortgibu was missing to make the setting complete — and in the same instant the now senile de Fortgibu entered the room.
