Signing on to do another event (I know, I am retired what was I thinking?), I was a little surprised I was actually accepted for the honor of covering The Rockabilly Fashion Fair. The Second Life event is from November 3rd, 2013 through November 23rd. Not knowing much about rockabilly, I did a little research on the web. According to that infamously always correct source, “Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music, dating to early 1950s in the United States. It is a “blend of country & western and rhythm & blues [that] … pointed the way to classic rock ‘n’ roll.” It has also been defined as “popular music combining features of rock ‘n’ roll and bluegrass.” The term “rockabilly” is a portmanteau of “rock” (from “rock ‘n’ roll”) and “hillbilly”, the latter a reference to the country music (often called “hillbilly music” in the 1940s and ’50s) that contributed strongly to the style’s development. Other important influences on rockabilly include western swing, boogie woogie, and rhythm and blues. While there are notable exceptions, its origins lie primarily in the Southern United States.”

Like most styles of music the popularity eventually wanes but seldom does music truly die, it gets swallowed up in a sub-culture until it is once again revived for a new generation. Rockabilly did see a meteoric comeback in the 80’s with the popularity of such bands as the “Stray Cats” and “The Pole Cats.” Music aside, the fashion is retro-cool in any generation.
